Jefferson in Jefferson County is indeed the birthplace of Wisconsin's open records law, as seen in County of Jefferson v. Besley, 5 Wis. 134 (1856). One of these days I plan to erect a monument on the courthouse lawn, catercorner from my office building. I think a book and candle would be a great way to represent it.
