Tales of two McCainiacs

Ashley Todd:
Police said the McCain campaign volunteer told them she was attacked by a 6-foot-4 black man Wednesday night.*
Charles Fried:
Chief among his reasons for endorsing Obama "is the choice of AK Gov. Sarah Palin at a time of deep national crisis."
Wise counsel.

* "If Ms. Todd’s allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists, but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee." — an executive vice-president of Fox News, allegedly employing some manner of logical reasoning

If I follow the Fox reasoning correctly, voters would suddenly suspect that Barack Obama personally assaulted Ashley Todd. Did Barack Obama carve up a 20 year old girl's pretty Republican face? We may never know for sure!

It's only slightly less unfathomable than this:

If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.

Much like Obama's is forever linked to the famous Che Guevara poster, I guess.

Interestingly, his comment still works even though we now know the story is a hoax:

I would say this is shocking, but we're beyond that place in American politics today.

At some level, the Obama phenomenon has worked some bedevilment into society's lower quarters, as evidenced by Ashley Todd
