Obv. symbolic of mirth. Tongue-in-cheek. Light hearted.
That looks like a misericord ("mercy seat") in the church choir -- in other words, the monks are meant to put their butts there during the service so that they can rest their legs while appearing to be standing. Clearly, some medieval artisan had a sense of humor.
Yep, that's exactly what it is.
