You see this a lot, e.g., here at the Madison Capital Times:

It's canvass. Canvas is what you paint on and make tents out of.

    For years, the only Madison paper you could rest assured would contain almost no typos or grammatical foul-ups was the Onion. It moved to NYC.

    Bussed instead of bused is another one that drives me crazy. "The Democrats bussed thousands of demonstrators to Madison." Yikes!

    There are many demonstrators who would like to have been bussed, particularly by some of the Hollywood folks who stopped by.
