"Don't be afraid, dear young people, if the Lord calls you to the religious, monastic or missionary life," the pope said in a message issued ahead of World Youth Day on March 28.• His Holiness comes under fire
Meanwhile a Brazilian teevee station aired a video showing an 82-year-old prelate having sex with a 19-year-old youth.
Vatican number two Tarcisio Bertone said Tuesday that the Roman Catholic Church enjoys "special help from on high."
• Pupils used to exercise naked
• Swiftly defrocked after 30 years
• I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
The cardinal also apologized for his role in the church's investigation into an abusive priest in 1975.
ReplyDeleteIt took him thirty-five years to apologize? The only way to show that he actually is sorry is to resign and cooperate with the police and government in every way possible to get to the bottom of this mess.
"He's lost all moral authority to lead, but by replacing him, it won't resolve the problem," Kelly said, arguing the Vatican would "just replace guys with other guys."
With Brady working with the police to investigate the Church, it won't matter who the replacements are. If any of the bishops are guilty of complicity in these crimes and do not confess and cooperate, they need prison time.
The entire leadership of the Roman Catholic Church has lost its moral authority. Not one bishop, archbishop, cardinal or pope can be trusted today. I'm sure they are not all corrupt, but the conspiracy of silence has destroyed them all.
"[The pope] should offer the greatest silence possible, not because he doesn't care about the abuse but because it would involve him in scandal and undermine his magisterium." And we can't have that.
ReplyDeleteThe Pope is already involved. He was involved when John Paul II was trying to find a way to keep things from looking too bad after the bishops worldwide had put themselves and their reputation ahead of the children in their dioceses by moving child molesters to new churches and refusing to cooperate with the police.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing Pope Benedict can do to distance himself from this insult to the laity of the Catholic Church. He can only resign and beg the forgiveness of those who suffered from the callous behavior of the bishops and priests throughout the world. Most of the Cardinals who would be electing his replacement need to resign as well.
It will take a lot of reform for the RCC to recover its moral authority. Maybe they should have a target date of 31 October 2017.
"After his resignation as Archbishop of Boston, John Paul appointed Cardinal Law to a post in Rome, putting him in charge of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, with the title of Archpriest."
ReplyDeleteA new meaning for the "Peter Principle."
